Liam Yates is one of our developing U23 riders. He has a BMX background and is very skilful rider. His dad ‘Sean Yates’ was a very successful Tour D’ France rider and Olympian. He is also one of the DS’ for Tinkoff.
I am from the Ashdown Forest. Home of Winne the Pooh!
How did you get into cycling?
After I left school I became an apprentice mechanic at a bike shop and was trainined by none other than James Brickell! After a while working there my father bought me my first road bike from the shop and that was that.
What is your favourite type of race course?
My favourite type of course would be rolling with a flat finish. I also like courses that require some bike handling.
What is your favourite race to watch?
Tour down under. I love watching everyone come out early season all guns blazing!
What is your favourite race?
As for my favourite race to ride, that would be my local New Years Day 10 mile TT- a classic!
What is your proudest moment on the bike?
Proudest moment on the bike would be the 2011 Forest Row BMX jam at the local skate park, I got 1st and it was great day! The crowds were like nothing you have ever seen before!
I do still ride my BMX every now and then.
Do you have a certain playlist that you like to listen to before races? Favourite music?
I have many playlists! I love a good session on the rollers with the headphones on. I listen to Older Hip Hop and rap mainly, and stuff like The XX and Bon Iver for chilling out to. My favourite songs include Nas- Surviving the Times.
My favourite food! Good question. I am a vegetarian so any fruit or veg. I can’t beat a raw red pepper- nice and simple!
I also love homemade brownies! I know some good bakers 😉
Tell us a fun fact about yourself that way may not know about you….
When I was younger I lived under the table with my 4 dogs for 6 months! In protest to no longer wanting to share with my brother, it worked and my mum gave me my own room!
